Evaluation of "pinnipeds" breeding in ZOOs

The aim of the thesis was to evaluate the breeding of "pinnipeds" (sea lions, seals and walrus families) in the Czech Republic. Breeding "pinnipeds" in the Czech Republic has already begun in 1934. In this work, breeding is monitored both in the Czech Republic and in Europe. In my work, I monitor the period between 1989-2020. Data on the Czech Republic were drawn mainly from the yearbooks of the Union of Czech and Slovak Zoological Gardens. Data on the breeding of "pinnipeds" in Europe are drawn from the ZIMS (Zoological Information Management Software) database. In the Czech Republic, 5 species of "pinnipeds" are bred, of which there are 3 species of sea lions: the Afro-Australian fur Seal (Arctocephalus pusillus), the Northern Fur Seal (Callorhinus ursinus) and the South American Sea Lion (Otaria byronia) and 2 types of seals: the harbor seal (Phoca vitulina) and the grey seal (Halichoerus grypus). In the past, the California sea lion (Zalophus californianus), was also widely bred here. Currently, 7 zoos breed "pinnipeds". Successful Czech zoos include Prague Zoo, Liberec Zoo, Lešná Zoo and Chomutov Zoo. Other zoos: Brno Zoo, Ústí nad Labem Zoo, Jihlava Zoo did not manage to successfully breed a single cub in 1989-2020. Prague Zoo is one of the best zoos in the Czech Republic, which was the first to breed South African sea lions between 1989 and 2020 and by 2020 bred 12 cubs out of a total of 32 successfully bred sea lion and seal in the Czech Republic
